ABOUT ME
Hello and thank you for visiting my website.
My name is Jānis. I am a Horticulturist & Horticultural (Planting) Designer.
I have a keen interest in plants, gardens & horticulture.
To broaden my Horticultural and plant knowledge, I have worked at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey UK and studied garden design at Merrist Wood & Sparsholt Colleges.
I am a member of Surrey Garden Designers Group.
I also own a new UK National Plant collection (currently in development with a proposed status) with Plant Heritage .
My own garden is open for public few times a year within National Open Gardens Scheme (NGS).
HOW I CAN HELP WITH YOUR GARDEN
I provide Horticultural consultations, design planting schemes, source plants & create colourful gardens with succession & year round interest in mind. I also work with mature gardens that require planting renovation & refreshing in part or fully.
I am open for freelance collaborations with other garden designers, architects and landscapers for Planting Design projects.
IT STARTS WITH A VISIT TO MEET YOU & YOUR GARDEN
After a few initial questions via email or phone, I will visit you for a friendly chat to establish how you feel about your garden and what help your garden requires. This will be an Initial Consultation Visit for an hour to listen to your ideas & wishes, determine the potential of your garden, establish the scope of work and provide advice & recommendations from Horticultural perspective on best and most cost effective ways how to approach. Cost £50 to be paid in advance.
I am a Horticulturalist, therefore I do not advise on hard landscaping materials and other non plants related items (except garden irrigation). This also excludes trees, as I am not an Arborist and you will need to seek an advice from a qualified Tree Surgeon instead.
Should you wish to proceed with next steps following our initial chat, there are few services to choose from:

Horticultural Consultation - recommended for mature gardens with variety of existing planting (possible as alternative to Initial Consultation);

Planting Design for a part or entire garden to either create a new garden from 'blank canvas' or renovate a mature garden and subsequently carry out the work;

Plant sourcing & delivery service.

Please note - I do not provide regular routine garden maintenance (lawns, hedges, weeding).
PLANT SOURCING AND DELIVERY SERVICE
If you are keen to create your garden yourself and do the soft landscaping, I can help saving you costs and time by sourcing and delivering plants to your doorstep. Having worked in Horticultural retail, I know the best growers and can source the plants for all planting schemes & designs, be it a popular & widely available salvia or more rare and hard to come across plants that are generally not available in garden centres.

Minimum budget of £450 is required to provide this service, certain other size/weight & seasonality restrictions may be applicable.
PLANTING DESIGN BASED ON 'THE RIGHT PLANT FOR THE RIGHT PLACE' PRINCIPLE.
Based on our initial meeting, I will come up with plant suggestions and work on Planting Design based not only on soil type, aspect, your colour & style preferences, but also long term mature size suitability, instant impact and budget.
This will be a process in 2 parts:

General concept - identifies current or potential new planting areas, determines planting style incorporating current plants and proposed new plants + descriptions;

followed by Planting plan, details of seasonal interest, visualisations of your garden areas and subscription to plant aftercare instructions via email on monthly basis for 12 months.
Costs vary depending on complexity and size of your garden and start from £650. Exact quote will be provided following initial consultation.
HORTICULTURAL CONSULTATION
There is lots to know about plants and it can be overwhelming.
Whether you have inherited a mature garden with your new property of are struggling with problems in your garden, I can offer a Horticultural consultation that would help with:

Identifying plants in your garden, potential problems and respective maintenance regime;

Guidance with 'right plant in the right place' principle;
-
Identify invasive and difficult to eradicate weeds;
-
Soil pH and quality;
-
Any potential problems with regards to pests & diseases;
-
Recommend plants that would be suitable for your soil type, aspect & preferred maintenance level.
This would be a 1 hour visit to walk around your garden to examine plants and problems followed by an e-mail summary with recommendations including a list of existing and potential plant suggestions for your garden. Cost £195 to be paid in advance.
CREATING A NEW GARDEN OR
RENOVATING A MATURE GARDEN
Whether it is an old neglected border or a new garden to be created from 'blank canvas', I deal with:
-
Reclaiming space by reducing overgrown shrubs & trees up to 5 metres in height and spread by renovative pruning if required;
-
Redesign to renovate old, tired beds & borders;
-
Improving soil based on requirements of the planting scheme by incorporating organic matter and fertilizers;
-
Sourcing plants from trade suppliers saving costs by 10-30% in comparison to garden centres / online and planting herbaceous perennials, ornamental shrubs, trees with neat final look by mulching to retain moisture & supress weeds.

Designing and installing irrigation to help with establishment of new planting schemes.
Please note - I do not deal with anything related to 'hard landscaping': fencing, patios, retaining walls, sleepers, sheds.
Total cost vary depending on complexity and size of your garden and planting scheme. Landscaping work is charged at rate starting from £35 per hr, minimum charge 4 hrs per visit. Exact quote will be provided following initial consultation.
